What kind of animal was it?

The woolly rhinoceros mainly inhabited cold regions of the Eurasian continent, adapting to the harsh environment of the Ice Age. It had long horns and was herbivorous, feeding on plants beneath the snow and ice.

When did it become extinct?

The woolly rhinoceros went extinct around 10,000 years ago, with climate change and human hunting activities believed to be the primary causes.

Additionally, the Tibetan rhino exhibited at the "Fossil Hunter Exhibition" held nationwide in 2023-2024 is considered an ancestor of the woolly rhinoceros.

Pleistocene Epoch (Cenozoic Era)

The Pleistocene Epoch lasted from about 2.58 million years ago to about 11,700 years ago. During this period, glacial and interglacial periods alternated, and the Earth's climate fluctuated on a global scale. In particular, ice sheets expanded in the Northern Hemisphere, and modern humans (Homo sapiens) evolved and spread.

Large mammals such as mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, and saber-toothed tigers thrived during this time, but many species became extinct toward the end of the Pleistocene. This epoch was also significant for the development of human lifestyle and culture.
